An Early Etching, circa 1800s.

From this early etching it would appear that the dentist who extracted teeth in that bygone era had to have strong biceps and a knowledge of wrestling technique.

The most used instrument in the dental office was the extraction forceps. Often the only treatment for a carious tooth was immediate removal.

Today many more teeth are lost from gum recession than from tooth decay.

Numerous edentulous individuals give a history of neglected gingival inflammation, with consequent gum recession, inflicting the loss of all teeth.

The successful treatment of gingival inflammation, bleeding gingivae, and other periodontal conditions that result in gum recession and loss of teeth depend not only upon the removal of all calculus or other necessary operations, but also upon the proper & adjunctive cooperation of the patient at home.
