A Parlor Game Extraction or "DO-IT-YOURSELF" Dentistry

In the bad old days, when everyone thought the best cure for dental trouble was to pull the tooth, there were many bizarre methods employed to accomplish the task. Some of them were performed by the patient, his family, or friends, in the home.

A favorite procedure was to tie the string around the tooth and the other end to a heavy weight which would be dropped while the patient stood on a chair.

Then there was this method illustrated here, in which a friend could join in the fun by assisting with the extraction while other friends took pleasure from the comical antics of the patient.

Children were often rewarded for putting an extracted tooth under the pillow. It would be replaced by a five cent piece and they were told the tooth had been transformed into money.

As tremendous advances were made and the practice of Dentistry changed, so as the attitude of the patient changed. The "DO-IT-YOURSELF" Dentistry described above is very rare today. This is a tribute to the modern Dentist who has generated in the public mind sentiments of confidence and esteem for the profession.
