"The Golden Age of Prosthetic Dentistry"

Filling edentulous mouths with artificial teeth was, apparently, the most fashionable and lucrative dental procedure performed in the early 19th century. This portrait of the ornate, museum-like, consultation room of Dr. Fattet, with the eagerly waiting patients, displays detailed evidence of the great volume and importance attached to the prescribing of dentures. Almost all of the adults and even children, wore them at that time.

More teeth are lost from gum irritation, inflammation and recession, than from tooth decay. This fact was not clearly recognized at the time of Dr. Fattet. Not many dentists treated gingival conditions to save teeth; it was easier to extract them and prescribe dentures.
